STNAs Are Our Backbone
June 29, 2023
Unless you have worked in a nursing environment, you probably have no idea what an STNA actually does. Yes, they keep the residents clean and make sure they get to meals and activities, but did you know they also have hidden superpowers? It's true! State Tested Nursing Assistants are the eyes and ears of our residents. They know more about the residents than anyone else in the building; sometimes, they even know more than the family members. Their job is not only to be a caretaker but a listener, a confidant and a secret-keeper. STNAs are one of the first staff members that new residents meet and are often the ones holding their hands when they pass. They spend so much time with the residents that they build great relationships and become like family. The patience and compassion our STNAs show on a daily basis at Darby Glenn are inspiring.
Our very own STNA, Catie, has been working at the facility for four years. Her favorite part about working at Darby Glenn is the relationships she has made with the residents.
“I treat every resident as if they were a member of my own family. The residents make it easy to come to work every day, and I am happy to be a part of this team,” shared, Catie. We are beyond grateful for STNAs like Catie who show such enthusiasm in caring for our residents.
STNAs have an incredibly physical and emotional job. They need to be strong enough to lift residents to bed but gentle enough not to wake them in the night while repositioning them. They provide comfort not only to their residents but to the residents' family members too. Families need to know that when they aren't able to be there, their loved ones are being cared for, not only physically but emotionally. STNAs empathize and sympathize. They hold hands, give hugs and wipe tears. They are truly angels in disguise and are often overlooked.
June 15-21, we celebrated our STNAs, even though they deserve much more than a week of treats, luncheons and gifts. This year, we made customized water bottles, provided delicious lunches, and gave each of our STNAs a custom t-shirt. We want to emphasize what true heroes they are to our residents. STNAs are the backbone of every facility. They have a thankless job, so please take time to thank them whether you are another employee, visitor or a family member. To all Darby Glenn STNAs, we appreciate everything you do and could not do it without you! Happy STNA Week!
